Jaynehowarth’s Weblog

About Jayne Howarth: detailed biography

I am a UK-based journalist with almost 20 years’ experience in the newspaper industry, 15 (nearly) of which were with a daily, regional broadsheet, called The Birmingham Post. I was made redundant in November, 2008, and am embarking on a freelance career: I am actively seeking commissions!

At The Post I was a design page editor, books and travel editor, writer and reviewer. I’ve written anything from 50 word reviews on the latest lipsticks to 2,500 word in-depth profiles on celebrities – or just ordinary people who have really interesting stories to tell. The latter was usually the more satisfying.

Before I worked on the features dept, I was in the news department, where I held a number of roles over the years, including home affairs correspondent, environment correspondent and general news reporter. I also have some newsdesk experience.

So, what are my interests? In writing, anything goes, but I have a particular passion for children’s literature and write weekly reviews at The Post. I took on the post of press officer for the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, promoting its Red House children’s book award, in 2009.

I have undertaken copywriting for a university and city council; been commissioned by a PR firm to write profiles for clients; spoken at debates on children’s literature; edited and advised on bids/tenders for a business firm; had some B2B  news editing and commissioning experience; proofread books; PR… which suggests that I am versatile as a writer, reliable and able to adapt my style to suit the audience.

A stalwart for correct grammar, my copy is well researched, well written, lively and authoritative.

I also have led journalism workshops in schools as part of the Birmingham Book Festival’s Write On project. This scheme encourages professional writers to go into schools and engage and enthuse youngsters about writing. It is great fun and incredibly satisfying.

Away from work, I am governor at a primary school, with responsibility for literacy and modern foreign languages.

On my pages – below this biography - there are a number of articles from the Birmingham Post, which will give you a good idea of my style. I hope you enjoy them.
